Sleep To Wake
Robert Browning Remembers Elizabeth
By Julian Lopez-Morillas
March 18 - 21, 2010
San Jose Stage Company will present the South Bay Premiere of Julian López-Morillas' one-man show Sleep to Wake: Robert Browning Remembers Elizabeth, celebrating the life, love and work of the great Victorian poet Robert Browning (1812-1889). Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning not only gave the world one of its best known love stories, but one of the greatest collection of love letters ever written.
Robert Browning was an exceptional dramatic poet who wrote hundreds of poems. As an inventor of the "dramatic monologue," Browning's poems often adopt an historic or invented character as their narrator. Though Browning also wrote plays, his poetry is what secured his place in the English literary canon. My Last Duchess, Porphyria's Lover and The Bishop Orders His Tomb, as well as the classic Pied Piper of Hamelin, are among Browning's most popular pieces.
