Intimate Off-Broadway-Style Theater
Founded in 1983, San Jose Stage Company is a professional theatre company dedicated to producing the works of contemporary playwrights that speak to the conditions, hopes and fears of all mankind.

We operate in our own theatre facility in downtown San Jose. We produce five plays per season on an annual budget of approximately $850,000.00 and serve over 25,000 patrons each season.

Critical Acclaim & Box Office Hits
Considered by critics as the Bay Area's Premiere Off-Broadway Theatre, San Jose Stage Company has received national and international critical acclaim for many of its productions.

  • San Jose Stage Company developed and produced the World Premiere of the musical CUMBERLAND BLUES. The popular production included the music of world-renowned songwriters Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter of The Grateful Dead.
  • San Jose Stage Company's production of Edward Albee's WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? was called "the best theater to come out of San Jose in 1996-97" by the San Jose Mercury News.
  • During its production of GRACE AND GLORIE, the Mercury News gave "San Jose Stage an edge...as the South Bay's best non-musical theatre company."
  • San Jose Stage Company has the distinction of producing the longest-running production in San Jose history, ANGRY HOUSEWIVES, which ran for 28 months.

San Jose Stage Company is a leading force in the Bay Area's artistic community.

  • San Jose Stage Company negotiated the first Small Professional Theatre Contract with the Actor's Equity Union, which affords the highest quality of talent for our productions.
  • San Jose Stage Company was a pilot partner in Theatre Bay Area's Community Box Office Network, which provides professional box office services to a number of performing arts organizations.
  • For 12 years, San Jose Stage Company and the City Of San Jose's Office of Cultural Affairs co-sponsored the Downtown Arts Series, which offered new and emerging arts organizations the opportunity to produce in a professional downtown venue.
